The Don Award

Adam Scott - Golf

Adam joined Australia’s sporting greats when, showing nerves of steel he won a sudden-death playoff to become the first Australia to win the coveted US Masters.  What is remarkable about this achievement is he is not only the first Australia to win the Green jacket but he bounced back from a devastating loss, nine months earlier rafter throwing away a four stroke lead with four holes to play in  the British Open.

Scott’s US Masters win places it right up there with Australia Great triumphs  such as Australia 11 winning the America’s Cup,  Rod Laver’s Grand Slam in the one year, Peter Thomson’s five British Opens, Cadel Evans Tour de France victory  and the great Sir Donald Bradman’s many batting records.

When considering the stature of an athlete or for that matter any person, I set great store in certain qualities which I believe to be essential in addition to skill. They are that the person conducts his of her life with dignity, with integrity, courage, and perhaps most of all, with modesty. These virtues are totally compatible with pride, ambition, and competitiveness.
