Women's 4x100 Medley Relay Team (Swimming) - 2008

Australia’s men had failed to win gold in swimming at the Beijing Olympics, but the women came to the fore with individual gold medals to Leisel Jones, Libby Trickett and Stephanie Rice.

A world record victory in the 4x200 freestyle relay stamped these as the Games of Australia’s Women.

Perhaps the crowning moment however came in the 4X100 medley where they defeated the powerful USA team in world record time.

Emily Seebohm had the team in second place at the end of the backstroke leg. Leisel Jones took them to the lead (and under a world record split) in the breaststroke and Jessica Schipper extended the lead leaving freestyler Trickett to bring them home to victory.

Their win slashed a massive 3.05 off the old world record. It was a truly remarkable performance.

When considering the stature of an athlete or for that matter any person, I set great store in certain qualities which I believe to be essential in addition to skill. They are that the person conducts his of her life with dignity, with integrity, courage, and perhaps most of all, with modesty. These virtues are totally compatible with pride, ambition, and competitiveness.
