Belinda Clark AM - Cricket

Belinda Clark has an impressive record as a player and as captain. She has a batting average of 45.9 over her 25 test innings and 47.49 over 118 ODI matches in an international career spanning 14 years. She captained Australia for 12 years, leading them to two World Cup titles (1997 and 2005). She remains the only Australian, male or female, to have scored a double century in a one day international. She continues to serve the game as CEO of Cricket Australia’s Commonwealth Bank Centre of Excellence in Queensland.

The Beginning

Belinda Clark was born (Sept 10, 1970) at Newcastle NSW and began playing cricket aged 13, at high school. She soon graduated to the Buckley Ridges Club were her run-scoring ability attracted attention and she got her first Australian call-up in 1991. She became Australian captain in 1994 and led Australia a record 101 times.

Women’s cricket offered fewer Test opportunities than the men’s game so despite being one of Australia’s finest performers she played in just 15 tests over an international career that spanned 1991-2005.

When considering the stature of an athlete or for that matter any person, I set great store in certain qualities which I believe to be essential in addition to skill. They are that the person conducts his of her life with dignity, with integrity, courage, and perhaps most of all, with modesty. These virtues are totally compatible with pride, ambition, and competitiveness.
