Ryan Gregson - Athletics

Ryan has enjoyed an impressive 2009, setting new personal best times in the 800m, 1500m, mile, 3000m and 5000m events and being named Athletics International's Emerging Athlete of the Year.

At the Sydney Track Classic in February Ryan lowered his personal best to 3:37.24 over 1500m before bettering his times in both the 3000m and 5000m in a very successful March, his 7:57.45 over 3000m in Christchurch a new Australian junior record. In May Ryan clocked a new personal best in the two-lap event, his fourth career-best mark for the year. A fifth lifetime best followed in June when Ryan posted 3:59.67 over the mile distance In Ostrava (CZE).

In July Ryan travelled to Belgrade, Serbia, for the World University Games, crossing the line in 3:43.10 to just miss out on a podium finish. Later that month he recorded his fastest ever time over one mile, clocking 3:55.05 to finish eighth in London. As a result of his stellar season Ryan was selected to represent Australia in the 1500m at the World Athletic Championships in Berlin in August, a great experience for a 19 year old.

When considering the stature of an athlete or for that matter any person, I set great store in certain qualities which I believe to be essential in addition to skill. They are that the person conducts his of her life with dignity, with integrity, courage, and perhaps most of all, with modesty. These virtues are totally compatible with pride, ambition, and competitiveness.
