Nicholas Purnell - Rowing

2010 has been a big year for 20 year old Nicholas Purnell with selection in the Under 23 Men's Coxless 4 Team that took the Bronze Medal at the Under 23 World Championships in Belarus in July. Italy, Great Britain and Australia were only separated by 0.63 seconds with 500m remaining, but Italy held on for gold, while the British pipped Australia by just 0.07 seconds.

It concluded a strong tour for Nicholas and the team, after they had all featured in the Senior A World Cup tour in June and July. Purnell and his team mates had won the gold medal at the World Cup 2 in Munich in the men's four, before featuring in the Australian men's eight crew at World Cup 3 in Lucerne that won the silver medal.

In August Nicholas competed in the 2010 World Championships selection trials and has been selected in the Men's Senior 8 for the Championships which will be held at Lake Karapiro in New Zealand in early November.

Nicholas rows for Sydney University but resides at the AIS in Canberrra and has a Rowing Australia High Performance Scholarship.

When considering the stature of an athlete or for that matter any person, I set great store in certain qualities which I believe to be essential in addition to skill. They are that the person conducts his of her life with dignity, with integrity, courage, and perhaps most of all, with modesty. These virtues are totally compatible with pride, ambition, and competitiveness.
