Liz Watson - Netball

Liz Watson was awarded The Sport Australia Hall of Fame Scholarship and Mentoring Program in October 2014 for the 2015 year. Her Mentor is Debbie Watson OAM.

Liz was born on the 30th of March 1994 in Melbourne, to parents, Manuela and Neil Watson, and has two brothers Matthew and Damien.

She attended primary school at St.Fidelis Primary School and received a sports scholarship to Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School for her high schooling. After completing VCE in 2012 she received the Michael Malthouse Elite Sports Bursary at Latrobe University, to study health science.

Born into a sporting family, Liz's uncle Steven Alessio was a 200 gamer for Essendon Football Club, her uncle Anthony Alessio a 6 times State representative in the Victorian Football League and her brother currently at Carlton football club; sport was defiantly a theme in my family.

Liz participated in lots of different sports as a junior reaching state competitions in triple jump, 800m and Cross country. As well as athletics, she played basketball and it wasn’t until the age of 12 that she developed a love for netball through primary school inter-school sports competitions.

From this age onwards she was representing Victoria in state teams in under 12s, under 15s, under 17s, under 19s and under 21s. Her Victoria Netball League coaches Marg Lind and Nicole Richardson with the City West Falcons heavily influenced Liz. As well as this her family have been the biggest support in her career and continue to be her biggest fans.

Liz achieved her ultimate goal of playing for the Melbourne Vixens and becoming a member of the Australian Diamonds Squad this year.

Top 5 performances of the last 18 months:

  • Member of the Australian Diamonds Netball Team for Commonwealth Games Selection
  • Member of the Melbourne Vixens Premiership team
  • Rookie of the year for Melbourne Vixens
  • Captain of the Victorian Flames in the Australian Netball League
  • Most Valuable player for the Victoria Flames in the Australian Netball League.

When considering the stature of an athlete or for that matter any person, I set great store in certain qualities which I believe to be essential in addition to skill. They are that the person conducts his of her life with dignity, with integrity, courage, and perhaps most of all, with modesty. These virtues are totally compatible with pride, ambition, and competitiveness.
