Molly Bretag is a clay target shooter who was awarded a Tier 2 Scholarship within the 2025 Sport Australia Hall of Fame Scholarship & Mentoring Program.
Molly was born in Murray Bridge, South Australia and has been around gun clubs since she was born. Shooting was naturally always part of her life, with her father John being the President of the Monarto Clay Target Club & her mother Ruth being Treasurer and Canteen Manager. Molly was involved in a variety of sports growing up such as swimming, dance, athletics and netball.
Molly was a competitive netball player, with a highlight of winning a premiership & being best on court for the grand final. In Molly’s later years playing netball, she was also competing in clay target shooting, and eventually stopped playing netball to pursue her shooting goals and aspirations.
Molly started showing interest in clay target shooting at the age of 10, although due to legal requirements of South Australia’s Gun Laws, Molly started competing at the age of 12 (in 2015). The sensation of breaking clay targets became addictive and from the first couple competitions, Molly was hooked on the sport.
Molly began competing in the Down the Line Discipline, where over the first few years she gained valuable experience and learned the basics of shooting. Molly made many Zone and State teams, with success at a State and National Level. Molly travelled all around Australia competing in the Down the Line discipline and thoroughly enjoyed the comradery it brought.
Craving more success and chasing her Olympic dream, in 2021 Molly started competing in the ISSF Olympic Trap Discipline. Molly’s personal Coach Craig Bentley has played a large role in Molly’s success in both the Down the Line discipline and the Olympic Trap discipline. With his thorough coaching and dedication he shows to Molly, she has said she would not be the athlete she is without his ‘support in her corner’.
Within the ISSF Olympic Trap discipline, her successes started small, but over time, her successes started to grow; by making more women’s finals, she gained more experiences and learnings from being under pressure. All of the hard work paid off when Molly was selected for her first Australian Team competing in the ISSF Junior World Cup in Suhl, Germany in 2022. In the same year, Molly also made the ISSF Junior World Championship Team to Osijek, Croatia. In both these events, Molly won team bronze medals alongside two other Australian Junior Women (Trap Team Women).
Knowing what is expected, through a tough qualification, Molly made the ISSF Junior World Championship Team in Changwon, South Korea in 2023. Molly had a great competition, qualifying 2nd overall in the Women’s and finishing 4th in the final, just shy of a medal. Molly is now setting her sites on the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028 and then a home Olympic Games in Brisbane 2032!
“To be selected in the Tier 2 Sport Australia Hall of Fame Scholarship & Mentoring Program is an absolute honour and privilege. By receiving this Scholarship, it is showing me that my hard work and dedication to the sport of Clay Target Shooting is being recognised and that is very fulfilling.
