Founder and Inaugural Chair, Sport Australia Hall of Fame
It is with deep sadness, and with gratitude, that the Sport Australia Hall of Fame acknowledges the passing of our Founder and inaugural Chair, Garry Daly AM, who passed away peacefully in his sleep in Queensland on 12 February 2026.
Garry was the visionary who believed Australia should honour its sporting heroes in a way that would stand the test of time. That belief became the Sport Australia Hall of Fame an idea he nurtured, built and protected with unwavering passion. His contribution to Australian sport was profound, but for us, it was deeply personal. The Hall of Fame exists because Garry willed it into being.
Chair of the Sport Australia Hall of Fame, John Bertrand AO, reflected on Garry’s legacy:
“Garry Daly was a determined founder and a true architect of recognition in Australian sport. While we did not always see things the same way, I respected his unwavering conviction and the legacy he created. The Hall of Fame stands today because of his persistence, and that contribution deserves enduring recognition.”
Garry remained fully invested in the organisation throughout his life and stayed present, engaged and proud of its progress even during periods of ill health. He continued to attend events and gatherings whenever he could , a powerful reminder of the tenacity that defined him. His belief in recognising excellence in Australian sport never wavered.
Chief Executive Officer Adrianne Sarkozy reflected on Garry’s personal support and presence:
“Garry had a way of picking up the phone at just the right moment sometimes with encouragement, sometimes with advice I didn’t ask for but probably needed to hear. He cared deeply about this organisation and about the people leading it. Our conversations were often funny, occasionally challenging, and always driven by his passion for the Hall of Fame. I will always be grateful for his support of me, and for the honesty and heart he brought to every interaction.”
Behind Garry stood the great love of his life, his wife Karen, whose support, and strength were the driving force behind his journey. Today brings comfort in knowing he now joins her again in peace.
On behalf of the Sport Australia Hall of Fame Members, Legends, Scholarship Holders, Board and staff, we extend our deepest love and condolences to his children and grandchildren, and we honour the memory of Karen, who remained at the heart of everything he did.

Garry Daly AM did more than create an organisation he created a legacy of recognition, respect and belonging for Australian sport. Rest peacefully, Garry your work here is done, and your legacy endures.
