This year marked a milestone at our Gala as we proudly presented Australia’s first Unsung Hero Award — a recognition created to honour the individuals who are the heartbeat of community sport.
The 2025 Unsung Hero Award was presented to Allan Chandler for his extraordinary contributions across football and cricket in Victoria. Over several decades, Allan has played a transformative role in building inclusive, supportive and welcoming environments for juniors, women and senior athletes. His commitment has helped clubs thrive and grow into places where every participant feels valued, supported and inspired.
From strengthening participation pathways to championing equality at community level, Allan’s leadership has had a lasting impact on generations of players. His work represents exactly why this award exists — to honour those whose passion, service and dedication shape the culture of sport from the ground up.
Allan was presented with a $10,000 cheque by NewsCorp Executive Editor Peter Blunden and Sportscover Managing Director Chris Nash, before sharing his story on stage with Hamish McLachlan — a moment that reflected both his humility and the deep respect he holds within the sporting community.
In partnership with Code Sports and proudly sponsored by Sportscover, this award shines a light on the people who go above and beyond for their clubs, their athletes and their communities. We extend our sincere thanks to both partners for supporting this recognition and helping celebrate the heart and soul of Australian sport.
