Finn Luu is a table tennis player who was awarded a Tier 3 Scholarship within the Sport Australia Hall of Fame Scholarship and Mentoring Program.

For Finn, table tennis started off as one after school activity among many at the age of 7. A few years later, in 2015, it became clear that he had an eye for the small white ball when he won gold in the under 13 singles category at the National Junior Championships despite being only 10 years old. From the very beginning until now, Finn’s parents and support network have been very supportive especially in the way of giving him the freedom to discover his own strengths, make his own mistakes, and ultimately choose his own path. This has led to the life he now leads as an Olympic table tennis athlete alongside studying a bachelor’s degree in Health Science at Deakin University.

By 2019, as a 14-year-old, Finn was dominating the National Junior scene alongside his best mate Nicholas Lum. It was at this point in his career that he began venturing to Europe and Asia together with the National Coach at the time in pursuit of greater sparring and matches to further improve and make a name for himself on the international scene. It was then that the reality of there being a vast crop of super-talented athletes abroad began to sink in as early success on the international stage proved extremely difficult to come by. Despite the magnitude of the challenge that loomed ahead, Finn’s continual perseverance and daily pursuit of improvement led him to great success on the international youth scene having competed in 4 World Cadet Challenges, 5 World Junior Championships, won 2 Youth Star Contender titles, reached the top 20 in the International Junior Singles rankings, and become World Ranked 1 in the Junior Boys Doubles.

2022 marked the beginning of a new chapter in Finn’s career as he began to see results at the international senior level. A 4th place finish and his first ever win against a player in the top 50 at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games spurred him to continue going for more.

Fast forward to 2024, Finn has added to his growing list of accomplishments having recently won the 2024 Oceania Cup in New Caledonia and competed at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games where he narrowly lost out to a stronger opponent in the 1st round. Additionally, he now stands at 41 in the latest ITTF World Rankings for men’s singles.

“To be recognised by such a prestigious program as SAHOF gives me a lot of encouragement and belief that my efforts throughout my career are leading me in the right direction toward my goals. It is a great honour to be accepted into the program on scholarship, and I intend to maximise this opportunity I have been blessed with to continue learning, improving and reaching for new heights.” – Finn Luu on being selected as a 2025 Scholarship Holder
