Sophia Glasson is a fencer, specialising in foil, who was awarded a Tier 3 Scholarship within the Sport Australia Hall of Fame Scholarship and Mentoring Program.
Sophia was born in Shanghai, China in 2008 and moved to Sydney with her family at the end of 2018. After watching her brother fence she immediately fell in love with the sport and enrolled straight away. Showing lots of promise, she won her first ever competition, encouraging more training sessions and commitment to the sport. Sophia then began to travel internationally and compete against the top athletes in her age category in the world. At age 9 she won the U10 Paris Mini Marathon with a field of over 100 fencers.
At age 14 she competed at her first ever FIE tournament and made a T32 result at the U20 World Championships (best result from Australia). After this, she embraced every competition and continued to compete at the highest level. At the beginning of 2023 Sophia qualified into the Australian Senior National Team (Top 4), then proceeded to win 3/6 Senior National Competitions earning her way into number 1 in the country. This allowed Sophia to compete at the Asia Zonal Olympic Qualifiers as the Australian female representative for women’s foil. During her preparation she made a historic bronze medal at the Cadet Asia Zonal Championships. After training in Italy for one month, she competed at the Olympic Qualifying event where she finished 9th with a close 15-12 loss.
