Awards Criteria

The Don Award

A special category of annual recognition of current athletes exists titled The Don Award named in honour of inaugural Inductee and Legend Sir Donald Bradman and specifically the words he spoke when accepting Induction on behalf of the inaugural Inductees in 1985. This was:

“When considering the stature of an athlete or for that matter any person, I set great store in certain qualities which I believe to be essential in addition to skill. They are that the person conducts his or her life with dignity, with integrity, courage and perhaps most of all, with modesty. These virtues are totally compatible with pride, ambition and competitiveness.”

In considering nominations for this Award, the Committee will consider the following broad criteria:

a. Current Athletes or Teams, who through their performance and example over the preceding 12 months have had the most capacity to inspire the nation.
b. The performance is to have been achieved at the highest level of their sport.
c. The award is not intended to be a ‘best of best’ award.

A list of finalists will be selected from which the winner will be chosen.

The period for consideration will be the period of 12 months (or thereabouts) with the cutoff date being September (date to be determined annually) each year.
