Sponsor Update

Victoria University

Victoria University recently hosted the 8th National Sport Integrity Forum (NSIF), taking a deep-dive into challenges posed by sports betting. In collaboration with Major Partner, Sportscover, this year’s NSIF was titled: ‘Betting your bottom dollar, against the odds?’

The forum featured experts in the industry discussing regulation, legal and illegal betting, match fixing, the impact on gambling advertising on young people and livestreaming community-level sports events.

Hosted by VU Professor Hans Westerbeek, the panel included:

  • Simon Bishop: Executive General Manager – Governance, Risk and Integrity/Company Secretary, Basketball Australia
  • Lara Hayes: Assistant Director, Sports Wagering and Competition Manipulation, Sport Integrity Australia
  • Andy Cunningham: Senior Vice President, Global Partnerships, Integrity Services, Sportradar
  • Dr Catherine Ordway: Associate Professor, Sport & Exercise Science, University of Canberra.

The context for the 2023 NSIF was the digital transformation of (all) business, and how digital technology has unleashed a betting industry revolution. Among the many issues that sport governing bodies have to deal with in regard to providing safe and inclusive sporting environments, exposure to and the influence of sports betting is one of the greatest challenges.

During the virtual forum, the panellists emphasised the need for better awareness of the associated risks, and how important preventative education is in that regard. They also argued the importance of better national alignment of policies and regulation.
