The Sport Australia Hall of Fame is mourning the passing of Board Member Andrew Plympton AM who passed away on Sunday, March 24 at the age of 74 after a long battle with cancer.

Andrew had a prolific involvement in sport, as well as a long and illustrious career in the business sector. His many accolades include serving as President of the St Kilda football club for eight years, serving as an Executive Member of the Australian Olympic Committee for eight years, and being the longest serving President of Sailing Australia Inc, a position he held for seven years. He also was Commodore of the Sorrento Sailing Couta Boat Club from 2014 to 2016.

Known fondly as “The Admiral” to his many friends and acquaintances, his past positions also include a nine-year tenure as Commissioner of the Australian Sports Commission, as well as various Chairman, Director and Chief Executive Officer positions in both ASX-listed and unlisted companies for over twenty years.

Andrew also achieved great success in the sport of sailing, winning a World Etchells Class Sailing Championship and numerous National Championships.

Sport Australia Hall of Fame Chair and Legend, John Bertrand AO, said:

“Andrew was extraordinary in his sporting interest and his influence. It covered AFL football to government sports funding to the Olympic movement to grassroots sailing.

He was a remarkable individual.

Andrew served on the Sport Australia Hall of Fame Board from 2020 until his passing yesterday. His involvement as a Director again was exceptional in his ability to see the big picture as well as his attention to detail.”

The Sport Australia Hall of Fame sends our deepest condolences to his wife Kim, his daughters Katrina and Amanda, his beloved dog Enzo and all of the Plympton family and their many friends at this difficult time.
