Esteemed Member of the Sport Australia Hall of Fame
The Sport Australia Hall of Fame is mourning the passing of iconic Australian broadcaster Dennis Cometti AM, whose voice became synonymous with Australian sport for more than five decades. Inducted in 2019, Cometti was one of the most respected and recognisable commentators in the nation’s sporting history.
Best known for his extraordinary contribution to Australian Rules football, he also worked extensively in cricket and covered three Summer Olympic Games. He was beloved not only for his insight and timing but for his unique “Cometti-isms” — those witty, clever turns of phrase that made each broadcast unforgettable and brought a smile to fans across the country. His ability to capture the drama of a moment with clarity and understated humour set a benchmark in sports broadcasting.
Across a distinguished career spanning ABC Radio and the Seven and Nine Networks, Cometti called some of the most memorable moments in Australian sport. His commentary was never about himself — it was about the athletes, the contest, and the occasion — yet his distinctive style and legendary one-liners ensured he became an enduring part of each.
Chair of the Sport Australia Hall of Fame, John Bertrand AO, paid tribute to Dennis’s remarkable legacy:
“Dennis Cometti was quite simply one of the great voices of Australian sport. He had an extraordinary gift — the ability to describe the biggest moments with precision, intelligence and wit, while always honouring the athletes at the heart of the contest. His contribution to Australian sport goes far beyond commentary. He shaped how generations experienced the game. On behalf of the Sport Australia Hall of Fame, we extend our deepest condolences to his family and acknowledge a life that enriched our sporting culture immeasurably.”
Beyond his professional excellence, Cometti was admired for his humility, integrity, and generosity to colleagues. He mentored young broadcasters and earned the respect of athletes, administrators, and fans alike.
He leaves an indelible mark on Australian sport.
