Rebecca ‘Bec’ Henderson was awarded a Tier 3 Scholarship within the 2022 Sport Australia Hall of Fame Scholarship and Mentoring Program. Bec was the first race walker to be part of the Program.

Bec was born in Dandenong VIC, and started Little Athletics (Berwick) in 2006 at age six so she could spend time with her cousins. It wasn’t a sport she excelled in. In fact, she came second last in most events, until she competed in her first race walk, won, and never looked back.

By the age of 16, Bec was selected to represent Australia at the 2018 World Race Walking Championships and World Triathlon Championships.

Until 2021 Bec competed in the 3km, 5km and 10km Race Walks before moving into senior competitions and transitioning to 20km Race Walks.

In early 2020 Bec was selected to compete in the World Under 20 Athletics Championships, which was sadly cancelled due to Covid19.

Shortly afterwards, Bec competed in her debut 20km Race Walk at the Oceania Championships. Not only did she have a podium finish, third, it also saw her qualify for the senior age group and her first Olympics in Tokyo, 2021.

Given 2021 was the first year Bec could compete in the 20km Race Walk, Tokyo 2020 hadn’t been on her radar, but she competed in Tokyo as the youngest athlete to take part in the 20km race walk. A 38th place was a great achievement, especially considering she’d only walked a 20km race once prior.

Bec is not only an achiever on the track but also in life – Dux of her school, Berwick College and also attained Scholars at Monash University.

After sport, Bec aspires to study medicine while helping to inspire the next generation of young athletes to be the best they can be in both sport and life.

“Becoming a Sport Australia Hall of Fame Scholarship Holder is so amazing as it will help give me the resources to continue to compete at an elite level, while keeping up with my studies and work. It will allow me to continue improving and moving up in the senior ranks, to hopefully become the best possible athlete and person I can be. I am so grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this awesome program and can’t wait for the season ahead!” –  Bec Henderson on being selected as a 2022 Tier 3 Scholarship Holder
