Tayte Ryan is a track cyclist who was awarded a Tier 1 Scholarship within the 2025 Sport Australia Hall of Fame Scholarship and Mentoring Program. He was paired with Winter Olympic Gold medallist, speed skater Steven Bradbury OAM, as his Mentor.
Tayte began his cycling journey in 2020 after joining Port Adelaide cycling club and getting a taste for speed on the velodrome. For the next two years Tayte trained with the hope to be selected to compete at the 2022 Track Cycling National Championships in the U17 category. After earning selection for this event Tayte competed and won three silver medals, igniting his passion for competitive cycling.
The following year in the U19 Category Tayte collected all four sprint medals available at National Championships, being selected for both Junior World Championships and the 2023 Trinbago Youth Commonwealth Games later in the year. This proved to be Tayte’s breakout year, winning 3 gold medals in the Sprint, Keirin and Kilometre Time Trial at the Trinbago Youth Games, followed by a silver medal in the Sprint, and a world title in the Kilometre Time Trial at the World Championships. On his way to win his first world title, Tayte clocked a time of 1:00:546, just shy of the world record of 1:00:498. To top off the year Tayte was named as the South Australian Sports Insitute’s (SASI) ‘Junior Male Athlete of the Year’, as well as the ‘Program Athlete of the Year’ for cycling.
In 2024 Tayte also collected all four medals on offer for the Sprint, Kilometre TT, Team Sprint and Keirin at both National and Oceania Championships. Being selected for the 2024 Junior World Championships in Louyang, China, Tayte is competing as the defending world champion and intends to defend his title. In May of 2024, Tayte was named as the ‘Emerging Athlete of the Year’ for 2023 by Commonwealth Games Australia, a prestigious award to recognise emerging Australian athletes competing internationally.
“Becoming a SAHOF Scholarship recipient is a dream come true. I never would have considered that I would be able to achieve what I have in sport, let alone at such a young age. On top of this, to be recognised by SAHOF, such a prestigious organisation within Australian sport is a huge honour that I will be forever grateful for and proud of. I am really excited to work with Steven Bradbury and learn about his journey in sport and how I can use his experiences to better myself as an athlete and person.” – Tayte Ryan on being selected as a 2025 Tier 1 Scholarship Holder
