Vale Dennis Green OAM BEM – Esteemed Member of The Sport Australia Hall of Fame

The Sport Australia Hall of Fame (SAHOF) is mourning the passing of our esteemed Member, Dennis Green OAM BEM who passed away at his home in Sydney early this morning (5/09/2018) aged 87.

Green was inducted into The Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1986.

An Olympic bronze medallist, Green is not only one of the greatest surf-ski paddlers of all time but he was the first of a select band of athletes who can claim the honour of representing their country at five Olympic Games; 1956 Melbourne, 1960 Rome, 1964 Tokyo, 1968 Mexico City, and 1972 Munich, the first Australian athlete to compete at five Olympics. He was the Australian flag bearer in Munich.

SAHOF Chairman John Bertrand AO said; “When they coined the phrase “Ironman” in surf life saving they probably had Dennis Green in mind. Not only a remarkable and historic Olympic record he accrued an astonishing 64 Australian Championships between 1955 – 1974.

Dennis was a very proud Member of The Sport Australia Hall of Fame and he will be missed by his fellow Members and generations of Australians whom were no doubt inspired by his incredible achievements.”

The Sport Australia Hall of Fame extends its deepest sympathies to Shirley and his family.

A memorial service is planned to take place later this month with details to be communicated once available via Paddle Australia’s Website.
