The Sport Australia Hall of Fame is mourning the passing of esteemed Member Neale Fraser AO MBE, who has passed away at the age of 91. Neale was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1986 as an Athlete Member for his contribution to the sport of tennis. He also holds the unique distinction of being one of our seven Members who are Dual Members, recognised as both an Athlete and General Member (for his contribution to sport administration).

An icon of the sport of tennis, Neale claimed 19 Grand Slam trophies across both singles and doubles in his decorated career, including Wimbledon and US singles titles. However, it was in the Davis Cup that he really made a named for himself, leading the Australian team to four consecutive Davis Cup titles.

He is known to have inspired many of the greats of Australian tennis. Neale served as Chair of the Sport Australia Hall of Fame from 1997 until 2005.

John Bertrand AO, Chair of the Sport Australia Hall of Fame, said:

“It is with deep sadness that we mark the passing of Neale Fraser AO MBE, a towering figure in Australian sport and an esteemed Chair of the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. Neale was not only a remarkable athlete but a man of immense character and leadership. It was an honour to follow in his footsteps as Chair, and I will always cherish the memory of him presenting the SAHOF flag, signed by Sir Donald Bradman, which now holds pride of place in our office at the MCG.

Neale’s legacy as one of Australia’s greatest tennis champions is unparalleled. A serve-and-volley maestro and fierce competitor, he reached the pinnacle of world tennis, securing multiple Grand Slam titles across singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. Beyond his on-court achievements, his passion for team competition, particularly in Davis Cup, showcased his unwavering commitment to the spirit of the game.

As a Davis Cup captain, Federation Cup leader, and contributor to tennis at the Olympic Games, Neale’s impact extended far beyond his playing days, leaving an indelible mark on the sport globally. His tenure as Chair of the Hall of Fame from 1997 to 2005 exemplified his dedication to celebrating and nurturing the stories of Australia’s sporting heroes.

Neale will be profoundly missed by his wife Thea, his family, and the entire Sport Australia Hall of Fame community in Australia and around the world. His extraordinary life, both on and off the court, will continue to inspire generations to come. We extend our deepest condolences to his loved ones during this difficult time.”
