The Australian team which took both individual and team gold in the three day equestrian event at Barcelona in 1992 had to overcome a series of setbacks. The team was already depleted by injury and illness before the event and was reduced to the minimum three members when David Green’s horse was ruled unfit after the second day.
The surviving trio, Matthew Ryan, Andrew Hoy and Gillian Rolton were placed second entering the final showjumping event – a discipline not previously considered an Australian strength – but intensive preparation, inspired riding and the superior fitness of their horses allowed Australia to take team gold and Matt Ryan to claim individual victory
