Sam Kivell is a sailor who was awarded a Scholarship within the 2009 Sport Australia Hall of Fame Scholarship and Mentoring Program, he was paired with John Bertrand AO as his Mentor.

Sam was born in Melbourne in 1989.

Sam won his first national title in the 420 class in 2005, and he and his partner Max Taylor won the same event again in 2006 and 2007. This was the first time any pair had achieved this feat in the same class, and victory was even sweeter as it was achieved at their home yacht club.

Success in the 420-class prompted Sam and Max to move to the 470 class, and they competed in the World Championships in Melbourne in 2008. The pair then competed in Sail Melbourne that year and travelled to Europe to compete in a series of regattas in the lead up to the Beijing Olympic Games.

Sam continued to develop, and with Max he finished third in the 2009 ISAF Sailing World Cup- Sail Melbourne Regatta, earning them a spot in the Australian Sailing Development Squad.
