In 2007 Sam and his partner, Max Taylor, moved into the Olympic 470 Class and in 2008 competed in the 470 Class at the World championships held in Melbourne in January.
Sam & Max won the 420 Nationals for the third time in a row in late 2007, a milestone never achieved previously by the same pairing in this class. This was a very proud achievement especially as it was held at their home yacht club. They also competed in Sail Melbourne, one of only five ISAF grade one events held annually in the world.
Sam & Max then had the wonderful experience of competing against the best sailors in the world in the 2008 World 470 Class Championships in their home town. They travelled to Europe in 2008 and competed in a number of regattas in the lead up to the Beijing Olympics – a great learning experience for them in their quest of qualifying to represent Australia at the 2012 Olympics.
In 2009 Australian crews continued the tradition of outstanding success on the world stage for those involved in the 470 Class, in the ISAF Sailing World Cup – Sail Melbourne titles. In what is Australia’s most important Olympic class regatta, Sam and Max placed third. This was an exceptional result against first class opposition.
Sam and Max are both members of the Australian Sailing Development Squad for 2009
